Prevent Duty Training: What UK Organisations Need to Understand

Introduction

The Prevent Duty forms a key part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy and places a legal responsibility on certain organisations to help prevent people from being drawn into extremism.

For schools, childcare settings, and many UK workplaces, understanding Prevent isn’t optional — it is part of safeguarding responsibilities and wider duty of care.

What is the Prevent Duty?

The Prevent Duty is one strand of the Government’s Prevent strategy, which aims to stop radicalisation before it escalates into harm.

Organisations covered by the duty are expected to:

  • Understand the risks of radicalisation
  • Recognise early warning signs
  • Know how and when to raise concerns
  • Take proportionate, risk-based action

Prevent is not about surveillance or blame. It is about awareness, safeguarding, and early intervention.

Why Prevent training matters

Prevent training helps staff:

  • Understand how extremism can develop
  • Recognise vulnerability factors
  • Distinguish between genuine risk and everyday behaviour
  • Respond appropriately if concerns arise

In schools and childcare settings, this awareness is especially important, as staff are often in a position to notice changes in behaviour or emotional wellbeing.

A risk-based approach

A key principle of Prevent is proportionality. Staff are not expected to be experts, but they are expected to:

  • Be alert
  • Follow organisational procedures
  • Share concerns through the correct channels

Training supports this by clarifying what to do, who to report to, and how to act responsibly without overreacting.

Keeping knowledge current

Like safeguarding, Prevent awareness should not be treated as a one-off exercise. Refresher training helps ensure:

  • Knowledge remains current
  • Staff confidence is maintained
  • Organisations can demonstrate ongoing compliance

Online training makes this easier to manage, particularly for induction and refresher purposes.

Next steps

Our Prevent Duty course provides clear, practical awareness training covering:

  • The Government’s Prevent strategy
  • Why people may become vulnerable to extremism
  • The objectives of Prevent
  • How to take a risk-based approach
  • What to do if you are concerned

The course is approved by CPD & IIRSM, takes approximately 65 minutes, and includes an instant digital certificate on completion.

Organisations reviewing their safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities may wish to explore whether appropriate awareness training is in place for staff as part of induction and ongoing refresher programmes.
